Small Bathroom Plans

Remodeling your small bathroom involves proper planning and designing. Since you’re working with very limited space, you have to be very careful about all aspects that can make or break the change. It may help to get some expert and professional advice. You can also independently orient yourself with the technical and aesthetic details to get the right layout that suits you.

Things to Consider

Depending on the scope of your project, you may need to submit a formal and detailed plan of your small bathroom to be approved and given a building permit. You can research on the internet or visit the local building office to determine certain specifications, standards and requirements that may apply with regards to your project.

First, consider the layout of your current bathroom. Since overall area is small, you want to focus on keeping everything low-maintenance, comfortable and accessible. You should have enough working space to conveniently attend to your bathroom needs. When considering the layout, start checking larger features first like the bath or shower area, the toilet area, the sink or vanity area and storage area. Are these properly laid out in the most convenient pattern? Do some features seem to overwhelm the entire space needing to be replaced or removed completely?

Next, consider the three important spaces that will improve overall efficiency of the bathroom namely the floor space, counter space and storage space. Floor space is the available area for you to move from one point to another. Counter space is the available area where you can place items and appliances needed to do specific bathroom tasks as well as hold decorative items that can improve the symmetry of the room. Storage space is the available area where you can put things in to maximize floor and counter space. If you feel that one or more are inadequate, you can plan replacements and rearrangements to improve the layout.

The Finer Details and Systems

It is equally important to consider smaller details that can disrupt the appearance and balance of the small bathroom. Too many items placed on counter space can lead to clutter giving the bathroom a cramped appearance. Light fixtures, mirrors and decorations should compliment the room well in order to provide the illusion of a larger space. Bright lights in corners and cabinets are recommended for efficiency. Tall and wide mirrors are also ideal to expand the appearance. Decorations and other small details like door knobs, cabinet pulls or handles and window treatments should be chosen carefully. Light-colored window treatments using thin fabric are preferred. For other items, materials like glass and steel are also good.

You need to consider all features in the bathroom to widen space. Choosing the right fixtures and furniture such as pedestal or wall-mounted sinks, hanging cabinets and sliding shower doors will help in maximizing floor, counter and storage space. There may be some changes that you can do to doors, windows, walls and the ceiling to allow more light and space.

In your small bathroom plan, it is also important to consider mechanical and electrical systems for maximum safety and efficiency. Ideally, water supply, waste and vent pipes should be located in one wall which makes repairs easier. Electrical outlets and switches should be strategically placed so that all people can conveniently do their bathroom activities.
